What Are Public Speaking Monkeys?

“I’d like to introduce myself, I’m um, er … hold on where are my notes?”

Sound like you?… Don’t feed your fears

The deadline is looming in your head.  You need to know how to make a presentation and you haven’t prepared. You start to feel sick and suffer from a range of public speaking anxiety symptoms. Can you pretend to be sick? What are the alternatives? Say you have a doctors appointment? That’s not an option which means you’re bound to end up reading from your notes or talking rubbish. It’s what you did last time, remember? Facing the audience, even if it’s a virtual presentation may as well be facing the firing squad.

Any of this sound familiar?… These are your public speaking monkeys!

You need to know how to give a presentation and fast. We can help. Stop those meddling Public Speaking Monkeys® filling your head with irrational fears.

What’s the difference between Mini Monkeys and Chunky Monkeys?

We’ve been working with business professionals for over a decade, helping them to train and tame their Public Speaking Monkeys because we know they stop you or your teams from being their best. We’ve even written a book about it “Taming Your Public Speaking Monkeys: Building confidence for public speaking and presentations” by Dee Clayton.

The types of monkeys we see the most are:

Mini Monkeys that dent your confidence. These small worries stop you from being the best you can be. In the virtual world, these are worries like: “What if the technology goes wrong” and “They aren’t responding, am I boring them?”

Chunky Monkeys cause fear and public speaking nerves. These can be deep-rooted worries causing crippling fear, leaving you shaky, sweaty and struggling to control your breathing – both in face to face or virtual scenarios.

Why are public speaking monkeys an issue?

DOUBT

More often than not the monkey voices are negative internal voices that put fear and doubt in your mind about your presenting abilities. Do you find anxiety sometimes stops you even trying to get up to speak?

DISCOURAGEMENT

These voices then ultimately discourage you from talking in front of others altogether. Do you look for ways to avoid talking? Always the last to volunteer? Turn your video camera off to try to avoid being seen?

WORRY

The voices or Public Speaking Monkeys can mean we build up anticipation further, so we spend more time thinking about the worry rather than preparing. Do you find you spend more time worrying than preparing or practising?

ULTIMATELY you won’t do your best because of the monkeys inside your head. You’ll probably have to give your presentation regardless. But it’s not comfortable; you don’t enjoy it but at least you’ve done it because you needed to. Phew! Time for a stiff drink.

Don’t worry, the Public Speaking Monkeys are all in your mind. Literally. So that means that when we learn to catch them, connect with them and challenge them, you’ll be able to speak without anxiety and with real inner confidence.

So what’s stopping you? There’s nothing to fear but fear itself. Tackle your public speaking anxiety and tame those mischievous monkeys now.
