Find out how not to have a headache before you give a presentation
Let me tell you a story. I know a woman who put a new towel shelf up in the bathroom. When her husband stood up from the toilet, he banged his head on it, so the woman lovingly nursed his wound and offered aspirin for the headache, soothing cups of tea, Savlon and plasters. This happened a few times, and each time she was very sympathetic – but they didn’t move the shelf and the headaches continued.
Eventually, he marker-penned the underside of the shelf every time he banged his head on it. When they saw how many markings it had racked up (never mind his head!), they finally decided to move the shelf! The problem was resolved, and his headaches disappeared for good.
Why am I telling you this story? Because it’s about addressing a problem at the cause, not just putting a sticky plaster over the issue. It’s exactly the same for professionals who find that public speaking headaches are common -just taking pain killers, whilst easy, is not the answer.
The way to prevent headaches (and other public speaking speech anxiety symptoms) is to treat the cause not the symptom. The cause is stress and anxiety created by what we call “Public Speaking Monkeys” – those voices of self-doubt that say negative and discouraging things. They may tell you how everyone is judging you or convincing you how badly the presentation will go.
