Preparing For Business Presentations: Preparation Tips

Preparation of your content isn’t finished once you’ve done a few PowerPoint slides – in fact content preparation should be done long before that…

“It’s not the will to win that matters—everyone has that. It’s the will to prepare to win that matters.” — Paul Bear Bryant

  1. Start with the middle in mind. In the middle of the 4MAT structure I share in presentation courses is the usability (How) section.
  2. Consider how you want the audience to behave AFTER your talk and then construct your content to align with that result.
  3. Either do three points from one key topic well, or an overview of three topics well. Most poor business presentations happen when the presenter tries to fit the whole story chapter and verse into one 20 minute presentation!
  4. Ensure you time your presentation so you only cover as much content as you have time for. It can be tempting to tell the whole story no matter what time length you have.
  5. Repeat your key points and illustrate them in different ways as you progress through the content. People say it takes between 3 and 21 times to remember a message so at least 3 repetitions is a good idea (not sure about 21 in one talk though!)  Always think from the audience’s point of view and address any issues before they arise e.g. “I know what you might be thinking – how can we afford this new investment – well…”
  6. Always be prepared! Stay knowledgeable on topical issues and build a stock of relevant case studies, stories and statistics in case you need them anytime “off the cuff”
