It’s a new year, and I’m writing a new book on career-limiting presentations. So what is a career-limiting presentation? It’s just what it says – a presentation so bad it stops you from climbing the ladder of success. Although not as grave as career suicide, it will ensure you don’t get promoted as you get stuck with a label that is hard to shake. You’ve undoubtedly witnessed crash-and-burn presentations, either on YouTube or in real life. Perhaps you’ve even delivered one yourself (knowingly or not)! A presentation can be bad for any number of reasons. I’ve heard stories of presenters fainting, blowing up projectors, talking at an inaudible volume, making inappropriate jokes or simply boring the audience to sleep. The trouble is, if you don’t get honest and independent feedback every time you give a presentation, it’s more than likely that you’re not performing as well as you could.
It’s tough at the top
The more senior the position in the company, the worse it gets. People may not feel comfortable giving their superior criticism, even if it’s constructive. Chances are, everyone says “great presentation, well done.” In addition, junior staff are looking to learn from them. Whether they realise it or not, senior staff are teaching their teams and anyone who listens what an acceptable presentation looks like.
