Most business presentations I see don’t have enough two-way interaction. Often the presenter seems to take the approach that their main function is to “push” information out to the audience or talk AT them.
Maybe they find this approach easier or more controllable. Perhaps they have not seen anything else or aren’t confident trying new approaches. Perhaps its a British thing…after all we wouldn’t want to look crass!
But if your objective is for the information to be absorbed, remembered and acted upon then there is plenty of research that shows that you need to make the content interactive. After all at a sales meeting I hope you wouldn’t dream of just telling the buyer about your product without stopping. Hopefully you look for their comments and buy-in as you go along. So why should it be any different just because the audience is a little larger?
So next time you think about how to prepare your business presentation do consider making it more interactive. Do encourage the audience to engage with you and do get them involved in the story or information you are sharing.
You need to what is right for the audience size and style but mini role plays, exercises or discussions are good ways to bring the points home. But don’t assume you can cover too much in the time – interaction does take longer, but less is more if you want great results.
