What is Professional Development and why do it?

You might have heard the term CPD, but do you know what it means? It stands for Continuing Professional Development, which is the process of tracking and documenting the skills, knowledge and experience that you gain as you work – both formally and informally. Employees are required (often by law) to complete a certain number of CPD hours each year. These hours can involve anything from reading books to attending courses.

CPD can help employees by:

  • keeping their knowledge and skills up-to-date
  • ensuring their qualifications are maintained to a professional standard
  • helping to build confidence and credibility
  • allowing them to be more flexible and versatile
  • allowing them to showcase their achievements
  • aiding career progression and advancement
  • contributing to a professional sense of direction
  • ensuring they stay ahead of the game in times of uncertainty

 

Choose to improve with Professional Development

There are many different reasons why people choose to undertake Professional Development. One might be that their manager has highlighted a need for improvement, in a performance review for example. Then there are people who choose to improve, just because they want to!

Darren Hardy wrote a great book called The Compound Effect, about how making small seemingly insignificant changes consistently over time has a massive impact. We encourage our clients to adopt this philosophy of continual improvement, rather than striving for perfection. For example, we teach you new techniques as part of our presentation skills training and show you how to fit these into your everyday life. This means you’ll be constantly improving rather than waiting for your next big presentation.

 

Make Professional Development work for you

It’s a great idea to take some time to reflect. Think about one thing you could improve on that would make the biggest difference to your career this year. Next, develop a plan. Look at how you could break that task into small chunks, and identify how you can work on it every day or even once a week. Here are a few ideas:

  • Read or listen to books on your daily commute*
  • Download a Professional Development app on your phone
  • Get a coach/mentor to help you accelerate your success**
