A mind-set is defined as a particular way of thinking – a person’s attitude or set of opinions about something. It’s also the secret to my success as a public speaking coach and presentation skills coach; I always help my clients to first improve their mind-set and only then their skill set. In my experience, most training courses focus on teaching skill set alone and it just doesn’t get the same results.
Most people are impacted by their mind-set hourly or even minute by minute. To improve anything in your life, including public speaking, it is important to understand what your current mind-set is. Is it helping you to reach your objective or is it blocking you? If it isn’t, what do you need your future mind-set to be like? So how often do you reflect upon your current mind-set and what you want it to be in order to deliver a successful presentation?
My upcoming book has a lot of material about mind-sets for speaking success. It is intended to give readers the best possible chance of eliminating career-limiting presentations and delivering only career-enhancing presentations in the future.
The power is in your hands
When I’m doing presentation skills coaching, I always tell my clients that changing their mind-set will not only improve their presentation skills. It gives them a chance to understand the power of mind-sets and thus be able to positively impact upon the mind-sets of the audience they are speaking to. Imagine if your presentations made someone change their beliefs or behaviour for the better. Perhaps they will be better people managers, decrease their stress levels or improve their approach to safety. Wouldn’t that feel great?
I sat through a lot of training and talks when I worked in marketing for big organisations and in those 20 years, only about five of them made this kind of impact. But when it happens, it’s literally life-changing. These five talks helped me to overcome fears, set and achieve goals and even change my career path.
