presentation skills training

More flexibility means more success

One of the secrets to being a better presenter

There are many things you can do to improve your public speaking and presentation skills. One of them is to have a flexible approach. There’s a theory that states that the larger the number of options available to an individual or organisation, the greater the chance of success. Here’s why that makes sense.

Have you heard this saying? “If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got.” Well it’s not true, especially in these fast changing times. If you always do what you’ve always done, you might not get anything. You need to have plenty of other options available in case that one doesn’t work out.

Don’t just survive…thrive

I’ve seen stand-up comedians and presenters roll out exactly the same performance as they did the previous day or week but get totally different results. In order to thrive, not just survive, you need to be able to adapt – and ideally on the go.

Your flexibility needs to be tailored to the audience and what you want to achieve. I teach my clients to prepare for who the audience are and what they want to hear, as well as your own goals. Generally, the more flexible your behaviour and communications the more likely you are to be able to communicate effectively with more people.

I’m not suggesting you’ll be able to get it right for everyone all of the time, but it helps to manage communications by exception. So imagine that you notice that your meaning is not being understood by the audience as you intended. With flexibility you can adapt your approach, and you stand a much better chance of success.

Take action today

Make a list of the areas where you think you could be more flexible in your approach instead of always doing the same old thing. See how you get on. You might just surprise yourself!
